This week we had to write an essay about a book we have been reading for the past 5 weeks called, A long walk to water. This is my essay.
In the novel a long walk to water, written by Linda Sue Park. The story is about a boy named Salva that walks all across Africa, and a young girl named Nya that walks from her village to a watering hole and back twice a day, in south Sudan. The character that caught my attention was Uncle Jewiir with his survival and leadership skills, and how he always share all the food and water that he killed and found with the group that they walked with to the refugee camp in Ethiopia.
Uncle Jewiir is brave for just have coming out of the army to fight for his country (South Sudan). When he first joined the group it took him and Salva four days to fined each other. Salva's friend Marial was killed by a lion. Salva was scared to sleep after Marial was killed by that lion, thinking it was going to happen him as will. So Uncle Jewiir told Salva that he would stay up all night and keep watch. Uncle Jewiir is one of the bravest people in the story by far.
When Uncle Jewiir was in the army who knows what he would have seen. He could of seen his best friend shot or been the only in his team to survive an explosion, you don't know. But he came out feeling good, or at less that's what it sounded like. He could have be in total mental distress that could be eating him up inside. But I'm pretty shore the he was alright because he probably would have had a mental brake down.
Uncle Jewiir is kind, thoughtful and smart. Like when the group was in the desert and Salva had stubbed his toe and stop and stared to cry. But the group kept going on, But Uncle Jewiir saw that Salva was behind them so he went over there and Uncle Jewiir said "see those rocks just walk to there and will stop". When they got there Uncle Jewiir said "see those bushes just walk to there and will stop". When Uncle Jewiir joined the group everyone saw him as a leader. So that's were he went, to leader. He had lead them all to the refugee camp in Ethiopia.
In conclusion, Uncle Jewiir was a brave, thoughtful, and smart character in the story. I learnt from him to if I'm ever in that kind of situation that you should share all the food and water you find and to always pick up the slow people that are lagging behind the group.
